CANASTOTA, NY - AUGUST 24, 2021 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced its flags will fly at half-staff in memory of manager / promoter Jarvis Astaire, who passed away on August 21. He was 97.
“Jarvis Astaire was one of the most successful managers and promoters in British boxing history,” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “Although he preferred to avoid the spotlight and work behind the scenes, his influence cannot be overstated. The Hall of Fame offers our condolences to the Astaire family and joins the boxing community in mourning his passing.”
The son of a hat maker, Astaire is best known for his partnership with Mickey Duff, Terry Lawless and Mike Barrett, promoting events at Wembley Arena and Royal Albert Hall and airing on BBC. He arranged Muhammad Ali’s championship fights against Henry Cooper, Brian London and Karl Mildenberger. He managed middleweight champion Terry Downes and 1956 Olympic gold medalist Terry Spinks and was associated with Ken Buchanan and Frank Bruno. Astaire was also instrumental in the closed circuit company Viewsport Ltd. In 2004, he was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) from The Queen for his charity work.
In 2006, Astaire was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
