CANASTOTA, NY - APRIL 1, 2023 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced its flags will fly at half-staff in memory of lightweight champion Ken Buchanan, who passed away this morning at the age of 77.
“Ken Buchanan was a national hero in Scotland and brought fans around the world so many memorable moments during his championship career,” said Executive Director Edward Brophy. “The Hall of Fame offers our condolences to the Buchanan family and joins the boxing world in mourning his passing.”
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Buchanan turned pro in 1965 and won both the Scottish and British lightweight crowns before defeating Ismael Laguna for the WBA lightweight championship in 1970. Buchanan successfully defended his title twice in 1971, winning a 15-round decision over Ruben Navarro, which also earned him WBC title recognition, and a 15-round decision over Laguna in a rematch. Buchanan defended against Roberto Duran in 1972 and lost the championship via 13th round TKO. He continued boxing and challenged Ishimatsu Suzuki (L 15) for the WBC title in 1975. Buchanan retired in 1983 with a record of 61-8 (27 KOs) that includes wins over Donato Paduano, Carlos Hernandez, Carlos Ortiz and Jim Watt.
In 2000, Buchanan was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
