CANASTOTA, NY - OCTOBER 3, 2022 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced its flags will fly at half-staff in memory of bantamweight and featherweight champion Eder Jofre, who passed away on October 2 at the age of 86.
“Eder Jofre blended classic boxing skills with power to become a world champion in two weight divisions and an icon in his native Brazil,” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “The Hall of Fame offers our condolences to the Jofre family and joins the boxing community in mourning his passing.”
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1936, Jofre turned professional in 1957 after competing at the 1956 Olympics. He captured world titles in the bantamweight and featherweight divisions and is widely considered one of the greatest bantamweights in history. Following seven bantamweight title defenses, he lost the crown to Fighting Harada in 1965 and retired in 1966 following a loss in the rematch. Jofre mounted a comeback three years later and captured the WBC featherweight title from Jose Legra. “The Golden Bantam” hung up the gloves for good in 1976 with a professional record of 72-2-4 (50 KOs).
In 1992, Jofre was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
