Born Miguel Angel Cotto on October 29, 1980 in West Warwick, RI and was raised in Caguas, Puerto Rico.
He compiled an amateur record of 125-23, including a berth at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney representing Puerto Rico before turning professional in 2001 and capturing world championships in four weight divisions from light welterweight to middleweight. His championship run began in 2004 with a win over Kelson Pinto (TKO 6) for the vacant WBO light welterweight title and defended against Randall Bailey (TKO 6), DeMarcus Corley (TKO 5) and Paulie Malignaggi (W 12). He became a two-division champion in 2006 with a 5th round TKO over Carlos Quintana for the vacant WBA 147-pound belt and successfully defended over Zab Judah (TKO 11) and Shane Mosley (W 12) among others. Cotto added the WBO title in 2009 before winning a third divisional title with a 9th round stoppage of Yuri Foreman at Yankee Stadium for the WBA super welterweight strap and became the first Puerto Rican boxer to win titles in four weight divisions when he topped Sergio Martinez (TKO 10) in 2014 for the WBC and The Ring middleweight titles. In December 2017 Cotto announced his retirement from the ring with a record of 41-6 (33 KOs) that includes wins over such standouts as Cesar Bazan, Lovemore Ndou, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito and Ricardo Mayorga. With a combination of tremendous hand speed, punching power and poise, his aggressive ring style and exceptional skills made him a national hero in Puerto Rico.
Still involved in boxing, he is the head of Miguel Cotto Promotions.
