Born January 27, 1975 in Rio Piedras, PR.
He began boxing after moving to New York and authored an impressive 110-20 amateur career that includes victories over Brian Viloria and Miguel Cotto, a 1995 New York Golden Gloves title, medaling at the Pan-American and Central American Games and representing Puerto Rico at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The 5’ southpaw turned pro in 2001 and, in just his 16th pro bout, won the WBO minimumweight (105-pound) title with a 9th round TKO over Eduardo Ray Marquez. “Iron Boy” registered 12 successful defenses of the strap with wins over such pugilists as Alex Sanchez (W 12), Daniel Reyes (W 12) and Miguel Tellez (TKO 9) before moving up in weight to win the WBO light flyweight title with a 12-round split decision over Hugo Fidel Cazares in 2007. A string of six defenses followed including victories over Nelson Dieppa (W 12), Cazares (TKO 7), Rodel Mayol (TKO 7) and Jesus Iribe (W 12). Calderon lost the belt to WBA champion Giovani Segura in 2010 (KO by 8). Following a rematch loss to Segura (KO by 3), Calderon boxed twice more – a 10-split decision win for the WBO Latino minimumweight belt and a 5th round TKO loss for the WBO minimumweight title - before hanging up the gloves in 2012 with a record of 35-3-1 (6 KOs).
In retirement, the deft ring technician trained amateur boxers in Guaynabo.
